iPhone 17e: what actually changes compared to the 16e
Apple launches the iPhone 17e with the A19 chip, MagSafe return, and doubled storage. Here's what's new and what compromises remain on this affordable model.
A new affordable iPhone
Apple unveiled the iPhone 17e in early March 2026 via a press release. This model succeeds the iPhone 16e and targets users who want a current-generation iPhone without paying flagship prices. The starting price stays the same at $599, but base storage jumps from 128 GB to 256 GB.
Two configurations are available: 256 GB at $599 and 512 GB at $799. The iPhone 16e has been removed from the Apple Store, though the standard iPhone 16 remains at $699 (128 GB) and the iPhone 16 Plus starts at $799.
A19 chip and C1X modem: real-world gains
The jump to the A19 chip delivers a meaningful boost in performance and power efficiency. The GPU features four cores (versus five on the standard iPhone 17), which is still more than enough for gaming and photo processing. Image processing directly benefits from the new chip with a next-generation Portrait mode that lets you adjust focus after the shot.
The C1X modem replaces the previous generation's C1 and delivers cellular speeds up to twice as fast. However, there's no N1 chip and no Wi-Fi 7: the iPhone 17e stays limited to Wi-Fi 6.
MagSafe returns and a tougher display
Good news for magnetic accessory fans: MagSafe is back after being absent from the iPhone 16e. Wireless charging jumps from 7.5W to 15W – a welcome improvement for daily use.
The display keeps the same specs but benefits from the new Ceramic Shield 2 glass, which is more scratch-resistant. However, there's no Dynamic Island: Apple still reserves this feature for higher-end models, and the classic notch remains.
Design and colors
The design stays true to the previous generation. The 48-megapixel rear camera is mechanically identical to the 16e's, but software improvements from the A19 chip deliver better results, especially in low light.
Three colors are available: white, black, and a new pastel pink. Pre-orders opened on March 4 with in-store availability starting March 11.
Who is the iPhone 17e for?
The iPhone 17e is built for those who want a current iPhone with the latest essential technologies (recent chip, MagSafe, solid camera) without paying Pro pricing. The doubled base storage to 256 GB is a strong argument against the competition.
If you already own an iPhone 16e, the upgrade is marginal. But if you're coming from an iPhone 14 or older, the jump in performance and photo quality will be very noticeable.
